Responsible for directing, supervising, and coordinating the Traffic and Shipping operations, under the general direction of the Plant Manager. Duties involve direct supervision with responsibility for costs, methods and personnel and the implementation of company policies and procedures applicable to crating, checking, packing and shipping of company products to national and international destinations, and the receipt and distribution to production of a wide range of raw materials, purchased and component parts.


  • Plan, direct and supervise the work of approximately 1 to 2 persons engaged in crating, packing, checking, shipping, receiving, inventory control, material handling and office/clerical functions in accordance with established practices and procedures.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing, Quality Assurance, Sales, Purchasing and others to plan and route shipments in an efficient, cost effective manner and in accordance with company and customer requirements. Prepare domestic and international shipments and documentation compliant with Schedule B codes, current international packaging requirements and hazardous material packaging and shipping regulations. Adhere to any special shipping instructions, as required, and assure that all paperwork is properly processed, the bar-coding system is properly administered, labels are applied, identifying numbers are posted, material is protected, and applicable dunnage is provided.  Comply with computerized production and inventory control system objectives. Expeditiously report material receipts, usage, and shortages.
  • Assign, instruct, and direct employees in the proper performance of their work and implement efficient packaging and material handling methods. Provide for the orderly staging of audited shipments for immediate shipment or stock.  Develop, record, and provide written instructions for shipping employees such as routing slips, audit and disposition records, and finished goods file. Supervise the selection or nature of packaging.
  • Select carriers by use of trucking or air routing guides, customer instructions and shipping reference books.  Verify bills-of-lading, quantities and identifications on internal records and clarify discrepancies with appropriate personnel.
  • Prepare domestic and foreign bills-of-lading, certificates of compliance, carrier damage claims and process such documents, as required. Arrange efficient shipping terms with carriers from an economical and lead-time standpoint. Combine and consolidate shipments, as appropriate.  Arrange for carrier pick-ups.
  • Requisition supplies and materials. Provide verification to authorized personnel from shipping agents where delivery of shipments to customers has been questioned.
  • Assure that employee production and time reports are made out and verified. Process employee development records, schedule vacations for subordinates, and participate in the physical inventory process.
  • Respond to grievances at the primary level. Make recommendations on new hires, transfers, promotions, and terminations.  Collaborate with the Plant Manager and Human Resources on employee relations matters, safe practices, and adherence to the labor agreement.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or associated with the responsibility.


Education: Knowledge of traffic and shipping involving packing, crating, checking, shipping, receiving, inventory control and distributing procedures. Familiar with Quality Assurance auditing and shipping requirements. Equivalent to high school plus additional training equivalent to 2 years college or broad shop background in related areas such as packing, shipping, material handling, inventory control and distribution.

Experience: Over 1 year up to and including 3 years of shipping experience in a manufacturing environment preferred.

Other: Considerable judgment and responsibility is required to plan, schedule the crating, packing, and shipping electrical transformers, select carriers in a cost-effective manner, and provide for accurate documentation and protection of all shipments. Flow of work and character of duties involve normal mental and visual attention along with manual coordination. Forklift certification and/or ability to successfully complete forklift training and operate machinery safely according to company protocol. Organizational, interpersonal, communication and problem-solving skills.

  • Duration/Usual Hours Per Week:  Permanent, full-time, non-exempt. 40 hours/week minimum.
